Abstract

Ground subsidence due to mining activities presents significant challenges for foundation design in affected areas. The formation of voids beneath the surface creates unstable soil conditions, necessitating robust solutions for supporting structures. This paper reviews the application of pile foundations in subsided mining regions, emphasizing their effectiveness in transferring loads to more stable soil layers beneath the voids. We analyze various pile types, installation methods, and design considerations specific to mining-induced subsidence, supported by case studies from regions such as Australia and China. The review highlights the need for advanced geotechnical analysis, including soil-structure interaction modeling and real-time monitoring during construction, to ensure the safety and durability of pile foundations in subsided areas.
